73‑year‑old New York camper missing after RV found abandoned in Adirondacks

New York State Police are leading an intensive search for 73‑year‑old Craig K. Streeter, a resident of Mahopac, who has not been seen since August 2. Streeter’s recreational vehicle was located empty at campsite 36 on Moose River Road in the town of Inlet, deep in the Adirondack Mountains, prompting a multi‑agency effort to locate the missing outdoorsman.

Last known whereabouts

According to police, Streeter was last observed leaving a Stewart’s Shop in Indian Lake wearing a dark‑colored long‑sleeved shirt and jeans. He departed the store in his RV and headed toward the remote campsite. While it is not uncommon for Streeter to spend time off the grid, friends and family say he has not been in contact for weeks, raising concerns about his safety.

Search operation

After New York State Forest Rangers discovered the abandoned RV, the New York State Police (NYSP) coordinated with local law‑enforcement agencies, the Department of Environmental Conservation, and volunteer search teams. The search area includes the rugged terrain surrounding Moose River Road and nearby backcountry camping sites.

Police have emphasized that, at this time, there are no signs of foul play. Nevertheless, the expansive wilderness and unpredictable weather conditions make the search challenging. Authorities are using both ground teams and aerial support to cover the large area.

How the public can help

Investigators are asking anyone who may have seen Streeter, his vehicle, or any unusual activity along Moose River Road to contact the New York State Police at 518‑897‑2000. Tips, even seemingly minor details, could prove vital in locating the missing man.

Friends describe Streeter as an experienced camper who often enjoys solitary trips in the Adirondacks. His family hopes he will be found safe and reunited soon.

Background

Streeter, 73, has lived in Mahopac, a suburb of Westchester County, for many years. He is known in his community for his love of the outdoors and frequent camping excursions. The Adirondack region, a popular destination for hikers and campers, can be treacherous in late summer, with dense forest, uneven trails, and rapidly changing weather.

The ongoing investigation remains a top priority for the NYSP, which continues to allocate resources until Streeter is located. The public’s cooperation is considered essential to the success of the operation.
