Aldridge Gardens launches free nature‑journaling series for all ages

Aldridge Gardens, the beloved public garden in Hoover, Alabama, is opening its doors to a new free educational program aimed at fostering curiosity and mindfulness in the community. Beginning Saturday, Sept. 5, the garden will host a six‑session Nature Journaling Class series, each meeting from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the NaphCare Education Building.

Class details and instructor

Instructor Amy Sides, an experienced artist and educator, will guide participants through a series of approachable, stress‑free prompts designed to help them slow down, notice the details of plants, insects, weather, and everyday surroundings, and capture those observations in a personal journal. Sides emphasizes that the program is not about producing finished artwork; rather, it uses drawing and writing as tools for learning and deeper observation.

All skill levels are welcome—no prior art or nature‑journaling experience is required. To keep the experience accessible, Sides will provide paper, pencils, and colored pencils for every participant, eliminating any cost barrier beyond the need to reserve a spot.

Schedule and registration

The inaugural session on Sept. 5 is the first of six classes that will continue on Sept. 9, Oct. 3, Oct. 7, Nov. 7, Nov. 11, Dec. 5, and Dec. 9. Each class follows the same 90‑minute format, allowing participants to build a habit of regular observation throughout the fall and early winter.

Because space is limited, advance reservations are required. Interested residents can register and find additional information by visiting aldridgegardens.com. The program is free of charge, reflecting Aldridge Gardens’ commitment to providing educational resources that enrich the cultural and environmental life of Hoover.

Why nature journaling matters

Nature journaling has been shown to improve mental well‑being, encourage stewardship of the environment, and strengthen family bonds when parents and children participate together. By offering a structured, supportive setting, Aldridge Gardens hopes to nurture a generation of observers who appreciate the beauty of creation and are equipped to protect it.

Local families, seniors, and anyone seeking a quiet, reflective pastime are especially encouraged to join. The garden’s serene setting provides an ideal backdrop for learning, while the supplied materials ensure that participants can focus on the experience rather than on gathering supplies.

Community impact

This initiative aligns with Hoover’s broader efforts to promote lifelong learning, healthy recreation, and community engagement. By making the series free and open to all, Aldridge Gardens reinforces its role as a civic hub where residents can gather, learn, and grow together.

For more details on the class series, registration procedures, or to explore other programs offered by Aldridge Gardens, please visit the garden’s website or contact the education office directly.
