Upriver, Unhurried: A Morning Fly Fishing the Washougal River Will Reset Your Entire Week

There is a particular kind of quiet that only moving water can produce. Not silence exactly — the Washougal River is never silent — but a layered, living stillness that makes the rest of the world feel very far away. I discovered this on a Tuesday morning in early June, standing knee-deep in a gentle riffle about twenty minutes east of downtown Vancouver, watching a caddisfly hatch drift across the current like confetti at a party nobody else knew was happening.

The Washougal River runs roughly thirty miles through Skamania and Clark Counties before emptying into the Columbia just west of the town of Washougal, Washington. For fly fishers, it is one of the genuinely special steelhead and sea-run cutthroat streams in the entire Pacific Northwest — and yet on the morning I was out there, I shared my stretch of river with exactly two other anglers, both of whom were politely far enough upstream that we were essentially alone in the universe together.

Getting there from Vancouver is straightforward. Take SR-14 east along the Columbia River — which is itself a spectacular drive worth savoring — and you will find multiple public access points along the lower river corridor. The Washougal River Greenway Trail follows the river through Camas and Washougal, giving you not just fishing access but some of the most legitimately beautiful forested riparian scenery in Clark County. In late spring and early summer, the alders are a vivid, almost electric green, and the river runs gin-clear over basalt and cobble.

You do not need to be a seasoned fly fisher to enjoy a morning here. The lower river has sections that fish well for cutthroat trout well into summer, and a basic knowledge of a dry fly presentation will get you into fish. That said, if steelhead are your ambition, late fall and winter runs on the Washougal have a devoted following for good reason — this river punches well above its modest size when it comes to wild summer and winter steelhead. Always check current Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife regulations before heading out, as hatchery and wild fish rules apply and change seasonally.

What makes a morning on the Washougal something worth writing home about, though, is not purely about the fishing. It is the cumulative experience: the osprey working the far bank, the smell of cedar and wet stone, the way a good cast unfurls over moving water and lands with a soft, satisfying precision that feels slightly like a miracle every time. Even if you do not hook a thing — and some mornings you will not — you will leave feeling genuinely restored in a way that a weekend of Netflix simply cannot replicate.

Pack a thermos of good coffee, wear layers, and plan to stay longer than you think you need to. The Washougal has a way of rearranging your schedule, and honestly, you should let it. This is one of those places that reminds you why living in the Pacific Northwest is the particular privilege that it is.
