Washington State Drops in Education Ranking

Washington state has slipped once again in a national education ranking, dropping from 27th to 31st overall, according to the Annie E. Casey Foundation’s report based on 2024 data. The state’s Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction notes that national reports like these can overlook differences in individual states’ data collection, leading to unfair comparisons.

Education Metrics and Challenges

Katie Payne, Chief Strategy Officer for the state’s Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, mentioned that test scores in Washington have been trending upwards since they hit a low point during the pandemic. Among the 11 other states that use the same testing vendor, Washington students have the second-highest performance in English and the fourth-highest performance in math. However, Payne also acknowledged that there is room for improvement, with 14 states statistically outperforming Washington’s students in 8th-grade math.

Soleil Boyd, executive director of the Seattle-based Children’s Alliance, pointed out that instability during the pandemic is one factor that contributed to shortfalls in reading and math proficiency. The report also found that 57% of children ages 3 and 4 are not in school, a one-percentage-point decline from the previous reporting period. The state’s efforts to increase funding for education, including a tax on millionaire earners slated to help fund early learning programs, may help address these issues, although collections do not start until 2029 and the tax’s implementation is subject to potential legal or voter challenges.

Health and Economic Well-being

Washington also dropped in its health category ranking, from ninth to tenth in the nation. Additionally, the state ranked 26th in the economic well-being category, with 31% of children living in households with a high housing cost burden, a 2% increase from 2019.
