Wake County commissioners approve WakeMed‑Atrium merger to support rapid growth

During the annual Wake County update at the Justice Center, County Commissioners used the occasion to stress the region’s explosive growth – an average of about 66 new residents each day – and to defend the recently approved WakeMed‑Atrium strategic combination.

Growth drives health‑care strategy

Chair Don Mial opened the meeting by acknowledging that while commissioners may not agree on every detail, they share a single focus: the county’s future. “We’ve had a lot to celebrate this year,” Mial said, “but like I said, it’s also been a challenging year.” He noted that the merger will help support the county’s expanding population, especially in the eastern part of Wake where new families are moving in at a rapid pace.

Commissioners stand behind the merger

After a split vote and significant public pushback, the Board of Commissioners voted last week to endorse the WakeMed‑Atrium strategic combination. Mial described the decision‑making process as “one of the most intense and focused” of his public‑service career, emphasizing that the county’s leadership acted with long‑term stability in mind.

When asked about concerns that the merger could raise health‑care costs, Mial pointed to the insurance market as the real driver of rates. “The big issue that we need to be concerned about is the insurance companies because the insurance company is gonna set the tone. They’re the ones that drive the rates,” he explained. By aligning two major health systems, the county hopes to create a stronger negotiating position with insurers, ultimately protecting families from unchecked premium hikes.

Implementation steps remain

Mial clarified that, from the county’s perspective, the deal is considered closed, but several regulatory and operational steps remain before WakeMed and Atrium can formally combine. County officials continue to communicate with stakeholders to ensure the transition proceeds smoothly and that residents receive uninterrupted care.

The merger aligns with the county’s broader strategy to accommodate growth without sacrificing quality of life. By consolidating resources, the combined health system aims to expand capacity, improve access in fast‑growing neighborhoods, and preserve the affordability that families rely on.

Public response and next steps

While some community members voiced concerns about potential cost impacts, county leaders reiterated that the decision was made after careful analysis and with the best interests of Wake County families at heart. Ongoing public outreach will keep residents informed as the integration moves forward.

Overall, the Wake County leadership presented the merger as a proactive measure to safeguard health‑care accessibility amid unprecedented population growth, reinforcing their commitment to the county’s future prosperity.
