Los Angeles – Veteran actor John Goodman and his wife, Anna Beth Goodman, were spotted together at the Los Angeles premiere of the film Digger on Saturday night. The “Roseanne” star kept his look simple, wearing a black suit, a striped‑collared shirt and a gray tie, while Anna Beth turned heads in a deep plum gown paired with a black clutch.
A longtime partnership
John and Anna Beth have been married since 1989, having first met at a Halloween party in New Orleans. The couple welcomed their daughter, Molly Evangeline, in 1990 and have deliberately raised her away from the Hollywood spotlight, choosing to live in New Orleans for much of her childhood.
Health journey on display
While the evening was a celebration of the new movie, it also gave Goodman a chance to showcase the progress of his long‑term health journey. The actor began his weight‑loss effort in 2007, when he weighed close to 400 pounds. After achieving sobriety, he partnered with personal trainer Mackie Shilstone, adopted a Mediterranean‑style diet and emphasized portion control.
Goodman first disclosed that he had shed more than 100 pounds in 2010 after cutting sugar and committing to a rigorous exercise routine that included six‑day‑a‑week workouts. In a 2016 interview with ABC News, he explained, “I just stopped eating all the time. I’d have a handful of food, and it’d go to my mouth. I was just eating all the time. I was just eating alcoholically.” He added that he would lose 60 or 70 pounds over a three‑month period, only to reward himself with a six‑pack of beer and fall back into old habits.
Boxing and daily walks
Goodman has since turned to boxing and daily walks as his primary forms of movement. Speaking to Rolling Stone in 2023, he said, “I dug it. Nobody’s going to get hurt, but it’s just hitting the mitts and trying to learn. I never got good enough where I would trust myself to spar because once I get whacked in the face, I don’t know if I wouldn’t lose it.” He typically spends an hour to an hour and a half each session working the mitts, bags and footwork, describing the routine as “great.”
In addition to exercise, Goodman credits giving up alcohol as a key factor in his transformation. He quit drinking in 2007 after years of alcohol abuse, noting that the decision helped him “live life better.”
Local relevance
Although the premiere was a Hollywood event, the Goodmans’ story resonates with families across the nation who value personal responsibility, health, and strong marital bonds. Their commitment to raising their daughter away from the glare of fame underscores a traditional family focus that aligns with community values.
