Virginia Parents Celebrate Trump Administration’s Education Freedom Push at White House

Virginia parents and education advocates gathered virtually for a White House Back‑to‑School celebration on Monday, where President Donald J. Trump and U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon outlined a sweeping “education freedom” agenda. The event highlighted federal steps that return control of schools to state and local leaders, a move welcomed by families who value parental authority and faith‑based learning.

New Education Freedom Tax Credit

The administration unveiled the Education Freedom Tax Credit, part of the Working Families Tax Cuts, offering up to $1,700 in federal tax credits for scholarships that cover tuition, books and other costs at both private and public schools. The White House estimates that roughly 52 million students nationwide qualify, and more than 30 states have already signaled participation. Virginia families can now use the credit to support school‑choice options that align with their values.

Charter School Investment and DEI Redirection

Alongside the tax credit, the Trump administration announced a historic $500 million infusion into the Charter Schools Program, aimed at expanding high‑quality alternatives for students across the Commonwealth. To fund these priorities, the administration terminated over $2 billion in diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) spending, redirecting those dollars toward evidence‑based literacy instruction, credentialed school psychologists, charter schools and workforce training. An additional $67 million in grants for what officials called “inappropriate ideological curricula” and sexually explicit material was also ended.

State‑Led Waivers and Ed‑Flex Authority

The Department of Education issued its first “Returning Education to the States Waivers,” freeing more than $100 million from federal red tape for six pilot states. A record 25 states are now exercising “Ed‑Flex” authority, allowing local districts to bypass certain federal regulations without prior Washington approval. Secretary McMahon emphasized that these steps place decision‑making back in the hands of educators, parents and local leaders who know each child best.

Parental Rights Strengthened

President Trump’s Executive Order barring biological boys from competing in girls’ sports and from using private female spaces was reaffirmed, and the White House announced dozens of Title IX investigations into schools that fail to comply. The Department of Education, in coordination with the Department of Justice, also announced crackdowns on districts that socially transition students without parental notification, rescinding previous guidance on preferred pronouns. “Never before have parental rights been enforced at this scale — and parents are back in the driver’s seat, where they belong,” McMahon said.

What This Means for Virginia

For Virginia school boards, the new federal framework offers unprecedented flexibility—and responsibility—to shape curricula, allocate resources and protect family values. Local leaders can now pursue scholarship programs, charter school expansions and curriculum choices that reflect community faith and tradition, while also benefiting from redirected federal funds.

As the new school year begins, Virginia families can look forward to greater choice, stronger parental involvement and a federal partnership that respects the Constitution and the foundational role of faith in education.
