Virginia Man Sentenced for Threatening Former Kennedy Center Director

A federal judge in Alexandria has sentenced Scott Allen Bolger, a 33-year-old resident of McLean, Virginia, to one year and three months in prison. Bolger was found guilty of using a masked phone number to send a death threat to Richard Grenell, the former Director of the Kennedy Center.

According to court documents, Bolger used Google Voice to conceal his identity when he sent a threatening message on December 23, 2025, stating his intention to harm Grenell. The investigation revealed that Bolger had previously researched Grenell’s personal phone number and made contact before sending the threat.

When federal agents arrived at Bolger’s residence to investigate the threat, he attempted to mislead them by providing a false identity, claiming to be “Brian Black” and denying any knowledge of Scott Bolger.

As part of a plea agreement, Bolger also confessed to a prolonged harassment campaign against another individual, who is not a public official. From October 2022 to November 2025, Bolger targeted this victim using fake accounts on social media platforms and email services. He sent indecent images to the victim and created a public profile displaying those images.

The FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force Washington Field Office led the investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jacob Mercer and Russell L. Carlberg prosecuting the case.
