In a case highlighting the importance of sustainable fishing practices, three individuals have settled claims related to illegal fishing and false advertising in connection with Dudley Market, a high-end restaurant in Venice, California. The Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office announced that Conner Mitchell, Taylor Grant, and Cody Martin were involved in illegal sport fishing activities off the coast of Santa Barbara Island during 2020 and 2021.
Mitchell, the owner of Dudley Market, along with Grant, sold fish caught in Marine Protected Areas, falsely advertising them as traceable and sustainable. Cody Martin operated the commercial fishing vessel Predator, supplying the restaurant with the unlawfully sourced fish.
Legal and Environmental Implications
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife, in collaboration with the District Attorney’s Office, uncovered evidence of repeated violations through search warrants on cellular devices and the chart plotter aboard the Predator. The investigation revealed that sport-caught fish were sold commercially, violating state regulations that require commercial catches to be documented on electronic fish tickets before removal from the vessel.
The settlement imposes additional oversight and financial penalties on the defendants to prevent future violations. Conner Mitchell, Dudley Street Oyster Bar LLC, and Shark Bite Fish Co. LLC, along with Taylor Grant and Cody Martin, have been ordered to make payments as part of the settlement.
Santa Barbara County District Attorney John Savrnoch emphasized the importance of preserving Marine Protected Areas for the future of the environment and the fishing industry, stating, “Violating fishing regulations threatens the environment and the fishing industry that depends on sustainable fish stocks.”
