Spokane’s Central Library is set to host the opening ceremony for the annual Pride History & Remembrance Exhibit on Thursday, June 4, from 5 to 8 p.m. This event, organized in collaboration with Spokane Pride, will feature speakers, live performances, and stories from the local LGBTQ+ community.
Celebrating Local LGBTQ+ History
The exhibit, which will be on display throughout June, aims to highlight the history, resilience, and contributions of Spokane’s LGBTQ+ community. It includes archival photographs, historical artifacts, memorabilia, and other materials that preserve and honor the community’s history. These pieces collectively tell the story of a community that has significantly shaped Spokane’s cultural landscape and continues to inspire future generations.
Matthew Danielson, Executive Director of Spokane Pride, emphasized the importance of remembering and celebrating LGBTQ+ history. He stated, “Remembering and celebrating our LGBTQ+ history is uniquely important so we can capture the huge changes echoing through our culture as we move toward a world of universal love and equality.”
Library’s Commitment to Diversity
The Spokane Public Library is committed to providing access to information, history, and cultural experiences that reflect the diverse perspectives and stories of the community. Andrew Chanse, Executive Director of the Spokane Public Library, expressed the library’s dedication to inclusivity, saying, “We want everyone who walks through our doors to feel welcome and represented. Exhibits like this help ensure that community stories are preserved, celebrated, and accessible to all.”
The Pride History & Remembrance Exhibit can be viewed during regular library hours throughout the month of June on the third floor of the Central Library.
