In a move that could benefit numerous families across Alabama, the income limits for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) have been increased. This change, aligned with the 2026 federal poverty guidelines, allows more households to qualify for essential nutrition assistance.
Expanded Support for Families
The WIC program, designed to support pregnant women, new mothers, infants, and children up to age five, offers monthly food benefits. These benefits include a variety of nutritious options such as fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables, whole grains, milk, cheese, yogurt, eggs, peanut butter, beans, canned fish, and infant foods. Additionally, participants receive valuable nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and healthcare referrals. The Alabama WIC program utilizes electronic benefits to simplify in-store purchases.
According to Pam Galloway, Alabama WIC Director, “WIC is here to help women, infants, and children in Alabama improve their overall health by providing nutritious foods, nutrition education, and breastfeeding support.”
Income Guidelines and Eligibility
Under the updated guidelines, households earning up to 185% of the federal poverty level are eligible for WIC. This means a family of two can have an annual income of up to $40,034, while a family of four can earn up to $61,050 annually. Importantly, each unborn child is counted as a member of the household, potentially increasing eligibility for expecting families.
Families already enrolled in Medicaid, SNAP, or TANF automatically meet the WIC income eligibility standards, making it easier for them to access this support.
