Uwajimaya Is Taken. Go to Maneki Instead

Maneki opened in 1904, which makes it the oldest Japanese restaurant in Seattle and one of the oldest in the country. That fact alone should send you straight to the International District, but here’s the part that actually gets people: it doesn’t trade on that history. There’s no placard out front explaining it. The sign is small. The dining room is dim, the booths are worn, and the menu hasn’t chased a single trend in decades. Which is exactly the point.

The restaurant sits on South Jackson Street, easy to walk past if you’re not looking. Reservations are strongly recommended on weekends — they fill the private tatami rooms and the main floor both, and they’re not shy about turning away walk-ins when things get tight. Book ahead or go on a Tuesday.

Once you’re in, start with the gyoza. Yes, everyone orders the gyoza, and yes, there’s a reason. The skins are thinner than you expect, the filling is restrained, and the dipping sauce has a vinegar sharpness that cuts through cleanly. Don’t overthink it. Then go for the chicken karaage if it’s on the menu — lightly seasoned, fried properly, not buried under sauce. If you’re at the table with someone willing to share, the nabeyaki udon is the move for colder months: a deep ceramic pot of broth, thick noodles, egg, shrimp tempura, fish cake. It arrives still bubbling. Leave it alone for thirty seconds before you touch it.

Sake is the obvious pairing and Maneki does it right — they’ll walk you through the list without making you feel like you ordered wrong if you just pick something cold and middle-tier. A round of sake and a few shared plates runs roughly $40-60 per person, depending on restraint, which most people abandon around dish three.

The tatami rooms in the back are worth requesting. You sit on cushions at low tables, shoes off, and the partition slides closed. It’s the kind of setup that makes a weeknight dinner feel like it has some ceremony to it. Not precious, just deliberate. Groups of four to six work well in there.

Service is efficient and not particularly chatty, which suits the place. This isn’t a restaurant that’s trying to build a relationship with you over the course of the meal. It’s doing the job it’s always done: feeding people well, without fuss, in a room that’s been doing the same thing for over a century.

Parking in the International District is street-level and annoying, as always. Light rail drops you at the International District/Chinatown station a few blocks away, which is the smarter play. The restaurant is closed Mondays. Check the current hours before you go — they’ve adjusted periodically and the website isn’t always the fastest to reflect changes.

There are newer Japanese restaurants in Seattle with more Instagram presence and more ambitious menus. Maneki is not competing with them. It hasn’t needed to for 120 years.
