USPS Urges Voters in 34 States to Mail Ballots Today to Ensure Arrival by Election Day

The U.S. Postal Service is urging voters in 34 states to mail their completed ballots today, Oct. 27, so the ballots can arrive by Election Day on Nov. 3. In Louisiana, the deadline is even earlier—Nov. 2. The agency advises allowing at least seven days for delivery, noting that some states require the ballot to actually arrive on time, not just be postmarked.

Why mailing early matters

A recent investigation by ProPublica found that late‑ballot rejection rates rose sharply in certain rural areas during this year’s primary elections, largely because of operational changes that reduced mail pickups and routed more mail through regional processing centers. Those changes sometimes added extra transit time and delayed postmarks.

In response, the USPS says it has deployed “extraordinary measures” ahead of the November election, including additional deliveries, special pickups, and expedited local processing that can bypass normal steps when necessary. The agency also highlighted its track record, noting that it delivered 99.9% of ballots within seven days in both the 2022 and 2024 election cycles and expressed confidence it will do the same this year.

Alternative ways to return your ballot

Election officials stress that mailing is not the only lawful method. Amy Cohen, executive director of the National Association of State Election Directors, told Hearst Television that voters who cannot meet the recommended mailing date should consult their state’s election website for other options, such as delivering the ballot directly to the local election office, using an authorized drop box, or voting in person.

Each state’s rules differ, so voters should verify the specific procedures that apply to them. Links to official state election sites are available through the NASED voter‑resources page and the U.S. Election Assistance Commission.

Ballot problems and how to fix them

Even after a ballot is received, election officials must review it for completeness. A recent Common Cause analysis identified about 3,700 mail ballots in North Carolina with issues as of Oct. 24, most of which were classified as “spoiled” and required voters to submit replacement ballots. Common problems include missing witness signatures, absent voter signatures, or improperly sealed envelopes.

Tim Tsujii, elections director for Forsyth County, N.C., reported that his office had already spoiled 173 absentee ballots and sent replacements, while 24 more were awaiting correction. He emphasized that most issues stem from missing signatures.

Carol Evans, vice president of policy at Common Cause, cautioned against interpreting these findings as evidence of a nationwide crisis. “We are not seeing systemic concerns with vote‑by‑mail. Vote‑by‑mail is safe and secure,” she said, urging voters to follow ballot instructions carefully and to track their ballot status where tracking is available.

How to track your ballot

Many states provide online tracking tools that let voters see when their ballot was mailed, when it was returned, and whether it has been accepted. The U.S. Election Assistance Commission encourages voters to familiarize themselves with these resources and to contact their local election office promptly if any issues arise.

Some states allow voters to correct certain problems after Election Day, while others impose stricter deadlines. Voters should consult their state’s specific rules rather than assume a uniform national standard.

Additional assistance

For further help, voters can call the nonpartisan Election Protection Hotline at 866‑OUR‑VOTE (866‑687‑8683), which connects callers with trained volunteers ready to answer questions and address voting problems.

The USPS also notes that dropping a ballot in a mailbox does not guarantee a same‑day postmark; changes in mail transportation can result in a later postmark. Voters who need a free manual postmark can request one at any Postal Service retail counter.
