Lincoln, Neb. – On Oct. 27, All Kids Bikes partnered with St. Teresa Catholic School to introduce its Kindergarten PE Learn‑to‑Ride Program to the school’s kindergarten class. The program, run by the Strider Education Foundation, supplies schools with bicycles, helmets, curriculum guides and instructor training so children can learn to ride safely during physical‑education periods.
Building confidence and healthy habits
“Learning to ride a bike is about so much more than getting from one place to another,” said Lisa Weyer, executive director of All Kids Bikes. “It gives children the opportunity to build confidence, develop coordination and experience the joy of being active.” Weyer emphasized that bringing structured bike instruction into schools helps students discover a lifelong activity while encouraging habits that keep them away from screens.
Program details
The eight‑lesson curriculum begins with students wearing their Strider bicycles and helmets for the first time. Over the course of the program, instructors guide children through balance, steering and stopping techniques, gradually progressing to independent riding. All necessary equipment – including the lightweight Strider bikes designed for young riders – is provided at no cost to the school.
School perspective
“We want our students to experience the joy of learning, growing and discovering the world around them, and learning to ride a bike is a wonderful part of that journey,” said Sister Mary Michael, principal of St. Teresa Catholic School. “The All Kids Bike program gives our kindergarteners an opportunity to step away from screens, get active and build confidence as they develop a skill they can enjoy for a lifetime. We’re grateful to bring this program to St. Teresa and give our students a fun, meaningful way to build healthy habits that extend beyond the classroom.”
Community impact
Programs like All Kids Bikes align with broader community goals of promoting physical fitness, reducing childhood obesity and fostering safe, active transportation. By integrating bike education into the school day, the initiative supports families who seek safe, structured activities for their children and reinforces the value of outdoor play.
Looking ahead
All Kids Bikes plans to expand the learn‑to‑ride program to additional Lincoln schools later this year, aiming to reach more young families and reinforce the city’s commitment to active, healthy lifestyles for its youngest residents.
