US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced a six-month review of American military forces stationed in Europe. The review will evaluate whether the alliance is moving toward a model where European nations take the lead in defending the continent.
NATO Burden Sharing
Hegseth criticized some NATO allies for previously denying US military forces access to bases and airspace needed for operations targeting Iran. He argued that European governments should place a greater emphasis on military readiness and border security while increasing defense spending.
The Trump administration has called for a “NATO 3.0,” aimed at strengthening the alliance’s ability to deter future threats while encouraging member nations to invest more heavily in their own defense capabilities.
Under NATO’s Article 5 collective defense provision, an attack against one member nation is considered an attack against all alliance members. The United States remains NATO’s largest military contributor and continues to maintain its nuclear deterrent presence in Europe.
