US Marshals Fatal Shooting in Ottumwa

A 31-year-old man was fatally shot Wednesday when members of the U.S. Marshals Service attempted to serve an arrest warrant in Ottumwa, Iowa. The shooting occurred around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 500 block of North Green Street, according to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.

Investigation Underway

Officials said members of the U.S. Marshals Service were attempting to arrest Michael Zurek when an interaction occurred that led a deputy U.S. marshal to fire a weapon, striking Zurek. Zurek died at the scene. No law enforcement officers were injured.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and the Ottumwa Police Department are investigating the officer-involved shooting. Authorities said the U.S. Marshals Service is cooperating with the investigation.

Once the investigation is complete, findings will be submitted to the Wapello County Attorney’s Office and the Iowa Attorney General’s Office for review.
