University of Louisville fans gathered this afternoon at the historic Galt House hotel in downtown Louisville for the Cardinals’ annual kickoff luncheon. The event, hosted by the university’s athletic department, gave supporters a chance to hear directly from key leaders about the upcoming football season and the broader state of college athletics.
Athletic director highlights financial pressures
Athletic director Josh Heird opened the program by describing the volatile landscape that college programs now navigate. “We’re being governed by settlements and lawsuits, one day players are eligible, the next day they are not, and vice versa,” Heird said. He warned that the current model is unsustainable and emphasized that increasing revenue is essential. “We have to change the financial model that we have operated under for years. We have to monetize every asset that we have,” he added.
Coach Brohm confident in the team’s potential
Head coach Jeff Brohm followed with an optimistic outlook for his squad. The Cardinals entered the season ranked No. 24 in the preseason Associated Press Top 25 poll. “I think we’ve had a good camp,” Brohm said. “A lot of good things have happened, which is really good to see. I think we know our potential and what we can do. And at the same time, you know, we’ve had some things happen that haven’t been great. And, you know, as a team and as players and coaches, we’ve got to stand, you know what it’s going to really take to achieve the best.”
Brohm acknowledged the challenges ahead, noting that every opponent will be aiming for an undefeated record. “There’s going to be adversity,” he said. “We’ve got to continue to play through that. I sit up here and I think our team knows that every team right now thinks they’re going undefeated. And they’re going to win this whole thing. And yeah, that’s our goal. But in order to get to that end goal, you have to do everything in your power to win that one game.”
Quarterback Lincoln Kienholz prepares for first start
Cardinals’ starting quarterback Lincoln Kienholz, a transfer from Ohio State, shared his personal preparation for his first college start. “The work that I’ve put in in the background, you know, the time spent watching film, you know, taking trips out to California to work with my quarterback coach, you know, just things like that where I feel like I’ve put a lot of time and effort into it. And I feel like now, now is my time,” Kienholz told the crowd.
Season opener set for September 6
The Cardinals will open the 2026 season on Sunday, September 6, against No. 9 Ole Miss at the Liberty Bowl in Nashville, Tennessee. The matchup marks a significant test for the Louisville program as it seeks to improve on last year’s performance and climb higher in the national rankings.
Fans left the luncheon energized, many expressing confidence that the combination of Heird’s financial roadmap and Brohm’s coaching philosophy will position the Cardinals for a competitive season. The Galt House event underscored the strong community ties between the university, its supporters, and the broader Louisville area.
