Bounce, Spin, and Schuss: Ski & Snowboard Akron at the Boston Mills Brandywine Slopes Is Closer Than You Think

Most people picture Ohio and think flat. Corn. Maybe a river. Skiing does not usually enter the frame. That assumption, my friend, is costing you a perfectly good winter weekend — because tucked into the Cuyahoga Valley just a short drive south of downtown Akron, Boston Mills and Brandywine ski areas sit side by side like two chapters of the same excellent story. Together they form one of the Midwest’s most accessible ski destinations, and Akron locals have been quietly claiming them as their own for decades.

Brandywine, the larger of the two sister resorts, sits right off Interstate 271 in Sagamore Hills Township, about twenty minutes from Akron’s core. Boston Mills is just a couple miles away in Peninsula. Both are operated under the same ownership and share a lift ticket, meaning once you pay, you can shuttle between the two and double your terrain options in a single day. That kind of flexibility makes the whole experience feel much bigger than a small Ohio ski area has any right to feel.

The vertical drop at each resort hovers around 230 feet — not the Rockies, obviously, but do not let that number fool you. There are 18 trails between the two properties, including runs that genuinely challenge intermediate and even advanced skiers. The grooming is meticulous. Night skiing is available most evenings, and under the lights with snow falling, the slopes take on a quality that feels almost cinematic. I have done a Thursday night run here after a long work week, the cold air hitting my face on the first descent, and I can tell you the stress evaporates fast.

Beginners are especially well served. The ski school at Boston Mills is patient, well-staffed, and thoughtfully organized. First-timers have dedicated learning terrain away from the faster traffic, so nobody is white-knuckling it while intermediate skiers whoosh past. Snowboarding is every bit as welcome as skiing, and the terrain parks — complete with rails, boxes, and jumps of varying difficulty — draw a loyal community of park riders who are out there honing their craft all season long.

The lodge at Brandywine is warm and unpretentious in the best possible way. Grab a hot chocolate or something stronger at the bar, strip off your gloves, and watch the mountain through the big windows while your legs recover. Rental equipment is on-site and in solid shape, so you do not need to own gear to make a day of it.

Season passes are genuinely affordable by any ski-resort standard, and the proximity to Akron means you can be clicking into your bindings within the hour after deciding you want to go. No airport. No eight-hour drive. No hotel required, though a post-ski sleepover in one of the valley’s charming B&Bs is never a bad call.

If you have been waiting for the right excuse to try skiing or simply want to remember what it feels like to fly downhill on a Tuesday night, Boston Mills and Brandywine are your answer. Akron’s winter, it turns out, has a very fine pulse.
