Louisville Metro Animal Services seeks foster homes as shelter exceeds capacity

Louisville Metro Animal Services (LMAS) is issuing an urgent call for foster volunteers after a recent large‑scale animal removal added over 30 dogs and puppies to its already crowded shelter. The organization, which currently cares for more than 1,100 animals, said the influx has pushed it beyond its maximum capacity.

Situation at the shelter

In a Facebook Live broadcast on Monday, LMAS spokesperson Stephanie explained that staff had removed the dogs from a private residence described only as “pretty rough.” While the exact location was not disclosed, the removal was part of a broader effort to address animal welfare concerns in the community.

“We are full, full, full, full and taking in over 30 dogs from one house puts us in a really, really, really rough situation,” Stephanie said during the live video. The shelter’s capacity limits are being strained, prompting the agency to look beyond its own facilities for immediate relief.

Call for foster caregivers

LMAS is asking anyone who can provide temporary homes for dogs and puppies to contact the agency as soon as possible. Prospective foster parents can apply through the shelter’s online foster‑care portal, linked in the original Facebook post. Foster homes help reduce crowding, lower disease risk, and give animals a better chance at adoption.

Preventive advice for pet owners

Along with the foster appeal, LMAS reminded Louisville residents of basic pet‑care responsibilities. Stephanie emphasized the importance of spaying and neutering, keeping microchip information up to date, and ensuring pets are safely contained, especially in homes with fenced yards. “You need to make sure your pets are spayed and neutered. You need to make sure they’re properly microchipped because there are dogs and cats sitting at the shelter right now that are microchipped but the information is outdated,” she said.

The shelter also noted that many animals arrive with incorrect or missing microchip data, which can delay reunification with owners. LMAS encourages owners who cannot afford spay/neuter services to discuss financial assistance options with the agency.

How to get involved

Community members interested in fostering can reach LMAS by phone at 502‑473‑PETS (7387) or by visiting the shelter’s website to complete the foster application. The agency also welcomes donations of food, supplies, and monetary contributions to help sustain operations during this high‑capacity period.

LMAS’s request reflects a broader trend of animal‑welfare organizations across the nation facing increased intake numbers, often linked to economic pressures and seasonal surges in stray or abandoned pets. Local volunteers and foster families remain a critical resource for keeping shelters safe and humane.
