UNI retires Kurt Warner’s jersey in Cedar Falls celebration

The University of Northern Iowa held a special ceremony on Saturday at the UNI‑Dome to retire the jersey of former Panther quarterback Kurt Warner. The event, attended by students, alumni, and community members, took place before the Panthers’ win over Drake, underscoring Warner’s deep ties to Cedar Falls and the surrounding region.

Local roots and college career

Warner, a native of Burlington who attended Regis High School in Cedar Rapids, arrived at UNI in the early 1990s. He contributed to four straight conference championship teams, though he did not become a starter until his senior year in 1993, when he earned conference offensive player of the year honors.

From grocery store aisles to the NFL

After going undrafted, Warner signed as a free agent with the Green Bay Packers in 1994 but was released during training camp. He spent the next years working at a grocery store and playing in the Arena Football League, where his talent continued to develop.

His perseverance paid off when he earned a roster spot with the St. Louis Rams, leading the team to a Super Bowl victory and later playing in two additional Super Bowls during a 12‑year NFL career that concluded after the 2009 season. Warner has been inducted into both the NFL and Arena Football Hall of Fame, as well as Northern Iowa’s Athletics Hall of Fame.

Community impact

University officials highlighted Warner’s story as an example of faith, hard work, and dedication—values that resonate with the local community. “Kurt’s journey from a small Iowa town to the pinnacle of professional football embodies the spirit of perseverance that we strive to instill in our student‑athletes,” said UNI athletic director Jeff Huber.

The jersey retirement ceremony featured remarks from Warner’s former coaches, teammates, and family members, all of whom praised his humility and commitment to giving back. Warner, who remains active in charitable work throughout Iowa, addressed the crowd, thanking the university and the fans for their unwavering support.

Game day result

Following the ceremony, the Panthers defeated Drake on the field, providing a fitting backdrop to the celebration. Fans cheered as the retired jersey was raised to the rafters, a permanent reminder of Warner’s legacy at UNI.

Warner’s story continues to inspire current students and athletes, reinforcing the message that dedication, faith, and community support can turn modest beginnings into extraordinary achievements.
