Giants debut win over Cowboys lifts Dallas football fans

Dallas, TX – The Dallas Cowboys opened their 2026 season at home with a 28-20 loss to the New York Giants, who celebrated head coach John Harbaugh’s debut with a solid victory. The win gave local fans a thrilling contest and set a promising tone for the Giants under Harbaugh’s leadership.

Harbaugh’s first‑year vision takes shape

Months before stepping onto the sidelines, Harbaugh promised to build a team capable of beating the Cowboys. In his inaugural game, the Giants delivered on that promise. After a balanced offensive attack, quarterback Jaxson Dart threw for 230 yards, completing 23 of 29 attempts and adding 54 rushing yards. He connected with tight end Isaiah Likely for two touchdowns and found running back Devin Singletary for another score.

“We took steps in that direction,” Harbaugh said after the game. “I think we’re on our way.” The coach’s confidence reflected the team’s disciplined execution, especially in the second half when the Giants pulled ahead.

Key performances spark the win

Likely was flawless, catching eight passes on eight targets for 78 yards, continuing his role as Dart’s primary option from his time in Baltimore. Wide receiver Malik Nabers, returning from a torn ACL, contributed six catches for 69 yards, showing the depth of the Giants’ receiving corps.

Running back Cam Skattebo, back from a serious leg injury, rushed for 81 yards on 18 carries and capped the Giants’ first points of the season with a touchdown run. His signature celebration after crossing the goal line reminded fans of his resilience and determination.

Cowboys struggle with penalties and turnovers

Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott completed 22 of 34 passes for 175 yards and two touchdowns to CeeDee Lamb and Javonte Williams. However, a costly interception just before halftime and a series of penalties – eight for 85 yards, including a taunting call that forced an extra‑point miss – hampered the Cowboys’ momentum.

Coach Brian Schottenheimer acknowledged the self‑inflicted wounds: “It comes down to discipline, and we had some self‑inflicted wounds. I own that, and they own that.” The Cowboys’ defense, which allowed the most points in the league last season, showed only modest improvement, conceding 30 points in the loss.

Injuries and roster notes

The game also featured injury updates. Cowboys safety Malik Hooker suffered a forearm injury on the final play of the third quarter, and linebacker DeMarvion Overshown left with a hamstring issue in the fourth. For the Giants, cornerback Deonte Banks dealt with cramping in the second half, while teammate Greg Newsome was evaluated for a concussion but cleared to play.

Community tribute and next matchups

Before kickoff, the Giants honored the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, with Harbaugh switching between an NYPD cap and an FDNY hat to salute first responders. The tribute resonated with the Dallas crowd, underscoring the shared values of service and sacrifice.

Looking ahead, the Cowboys travel to Washington next Sunday, while the Giants head to Los Angeles to face the Rams on September 21.

Dallas fans can take pride in the high‑energy showdown that highlighted both teams’ strengths and areas for growth as the NFL season gets underway.
