Understanding ChexSystems: How It Affects Your Bank Account Applications

When you apply for a checking or savings account, banks often consult a consumer reporting agency called ChexSystems. Created under the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act, ChexSystems collects data on closed accounts, unpaid fees, overdrafts and other negative banking activity. The agency then provides this information to banks, credit unions and other financial institutions that request it.

What Banks Look for in a ChexSystems Report

According to Matt Bundrick, co‑founder of BankBonus.com, banks and credit unions search for patterns such as repeated overdrafts, bounced checks, negative balances, and frequent opening and closing of accounts. Unlike traditional credit bureaus, ChexSystems reports contain only negative information. A single mistake—like an accidental overdraft—does not automatically disqualify you, but a consistent pattern may lead to a denial.

ChexSystems also records the reasons why past accounts were closed. Current accounts in good standing do not appear on the report, and entries typically remain for five years before they are removed.

How to Obtain Your ChexSystems Report

You are entitled to one free copy of your ChexSystems report every 12 months, and an additional copy if you are denied a checking or savings account within the past 60 days. The bank must also provide the reason for the denial.

Requests can be made online through the ChexSystems website, by calling 800‑428‑9623, or by mailing a completed request form to:

ChexSystems, Inc.
Attn: Consumer Relations
PO Box 583399
Minneapolis, MN 55458

After the agency receives your request, the report should arrive within five business days. Checking your own ChexSystems report does not affect your credit score.

Clearing Negative Items from Your Report

If the report shows an outstanding balance, pay the amount owed and ask the bank to update the report. You may also send a receipt directly to ChexSystems for an update.

In cases where the information is inaccurate, you have the right to dispute it. Disputes can be filed directly with the bank or through ChexSystems’ online dispute process, and investigations are usually completed within 30 days.

Options When Denied Because of ChexSystems

If a bank denies you based on a negative ChexSystems entry, you can look for institutions that do not use ChexSystems reports, though this may limit your choices. Another option is a “second‑chance” checking account, which some banks offer to individuals with blemishes on their credit or ChexSystems reports. These accounts often carry higher fees, so it is important to read the terms carefully. Nevertheless, a second‑chance account can be a better alternative to costly prepaid debit cards or check‑cashing services.

Understanding how ChexSystems works and knowing your rights can help you navigate the banking system more effectively and protect your financial future.
