Emergency crews search Delaware River for missing swimmer in Delran, N.J.

Delran, N.J. – On Monday afternoon, emergency responders began a coordinated search for a person who disappeared while swimming in the Delaware River near the town. The first call came in at approximately 3:50 p.m., prompting the Delran Police Department, local fire units and the New Jersey State Police to mobilize resources.

By 4:30 p.m., a state‑operated helicopter, identified as Chopper 6, arrived over the river to provide aerial surveillance and assist ground crews in locating the missing individual. The aircraft hovered along the riverbank, scanning the water for any sign of movement.

Officials have not released details about how the swimmer entered the river or the conditions that led to the incident. The person’s identity has also not been disclosed, and no injuries have been reported. Search teams are employing both visual observation from the air and surface‑level sweeps with boats and divers.

Search effort continues

Deputy Fire Chief Michael Rossi said the operation will remain active through the evening and may extend into the next day, depending on weather and river conditions. “We are employing every available asset to bring this person home safely,” he said.

The Delaware River, which forms part of the border between New Jersey and Pennsylvania, can present hazardous currents, especially after recent rainstorms that raised water levels. Local residents have been asked to avoid the riverbanks while the search is underway.

Community response

Neighbors gathered near the river’s edge to watch the rescue effort, offering words of encouragement to the responders. Several community members posted messages on local social‑media groups, expressing concern and praying for a swift resolution.

Mayor James Miller issued a brief statement, noting the town’s gratitude for the rapid response of emergency services and urging anyone with information to contact the Delran Police Department at the number provided.

How to help

Authorities have asked the public to refrain from entering the water and to keep the area clear for rescue personnel. Anyone who witnessed the incident or who may have seen the missing swimmer earlier in the day is encouraged to call 911 or reach out to the Delran Police non‑emergency line.

The search remains ongoing, and updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
