UMass football draws first sellout since 2014 as Minutemen start season 4-0

Amherst, Massachusetts – On Saturday night the Minutemen will take the field against Eastern Michigan in front of a sellout crowd at McGuirk Alumni Stadium, marking the first home sellout for UMass football since 2014. ESPN reports that over 17,000 supporters are expected, a clear sign that the program’s recent turnaround is resonating with the local community.

Coach Harasymiak’s rapid revival

Second‑year head coach Joe Harasymiak has overseen a dramatic shift in the team’s fortunes. After a winless campaign last season, the Minutemen have opened 2026 with four straight victories, including a 37‑21 road win over Big Ten opponent Rutgers. In each of those games the offense has scored at least 35 points, a consistency the program has not seen in its short FBS history.

What the sellout means for the program

Since becoming an FBS member in 2012, UMass has never recorded more than four wins in a single season. The current 4‑0 start puts the team on a realistic path toward its first bowl eligibility, which requires six wins. A sellout crowd not only boosts the team’s morale but also signals growing community support, an essential ingredient for future recruiting and fundraising efforts.

Looking ahead

The upcoming matchup with Eastern Michigan will be the first home game of the season, and the atmosphere is expected to be electric. A win would move the Minutemen to 5‑0, bringing them within a single victory of the bowl threshold. Even a loss would keep the team competitive in the Mid‑American Conference and maintain the momentum built over the past few weeks.

Community response

Local fans and alumni have taken to social media to celebrate the sellout, emphasizing the pride they feel in seeing the program regain relevance. Many highlighted the importance of family‑friendly game day experiences, noting that the stadium’s recent upgrades have made attending games more comfortable for parents and children alike.

Historical context

UMass football’s journey to this point has been marked by challenges. The program recorded a winless 0‑12 season once and a 1‑11 record five times since its FBS transition. The current success under Coach Harasymiak therefore represents a significant departure from that historical pattern.

What’s next for the Minutemen

Beyond the Eastern Michigan game, UMass faces a schedule that includes both conference rivals and non‑conference opponents. Maintaining the offensive production that has characterized the first four games will be crucial. The coaching staff has emphasized discipline, strong fundamentals, and a commitment to the values of hard work and teamwork—principles that resonate with the university’s broader mission.

As the season progresses, the sellout crowd will be remembered as a turning point, illustrating how a community can rally behind a team that embodies perseverance and faith in a brighter future.
