Two Men Tragically Drown in Salt River Over Memorial Day Weekend

In a tragic start to the summer season, two young men drowned in the Salt River over Memorial Day Weekend. The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office identified the victims as Sahr Sewah, 22, and Jason Blake Jr., 23. These incidents have led local authorities to stress the importance of water safety as recreational activities increase with the warmer weather.

Details of the Incidents

Sahr Sewah was reported missing on May 23rd around 3 p.m. His body was recovered the following day, with the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office confirming accidental drowning as the cause of death. Jason Blake Jr. encountered difficulties in the water on May 25th at approximately 10:30 a.m., about half a mile downstream from Stewart Mountain Dam near Saguaro Lake. Witnesses reported that Blake was attempting to swim across the river when he began to struggle. His body was recovered shortly thereafter.

Water Safety Concerns

Neither of the men was wearing a life jacket at the time of their accidents, a factor that Sgt. Rob Marske, MCSO’s boating and water safety coordinator, highlighted as a common and dangerous oversight. Marske, who has worked the river for 17 years, noted that many people overestimate their swimming abilities and underestimate the river’s hazards. He emphasized that even strong swimmers need to be aware of underwater obstacles and the physical demands of swimming in a current.

Modern life jackets, including inflatable options, can provide crucial safety without being cumbersome. Arizona law requires life jackets for those paddle boarding, kayaking, or canoeing, and mandates that children 12 and under wear them at all times.

Additional Safety Tips

Alcohol consumption is another concern on the river, as it can impair judgment and swimming ability. Marske advised that maintaining a clear mindset is essential for personal safety. He also reminded river-goers to plan their exits carefully and to respect emergency crews during rescue operations.

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office plans to increase patrols on the Salt River throughout the summer to ensure safety and respond quickly to any emergencies. They urge anyone who sees a person struggling in the water to call 911 immediately.
