The Louisville Metro Police Department has released disturbing details about Michael Hristov, a 21-year-old man who was killed by police during a standoff at his home earlier this month. Hristov, who lived with his mother on W. Whitney Avenue, is suspected of targeting homeless individuals in a series of violent attacks.
Details of the Crimes
According to police, Hristov is accused of brutally murdering a homeless man named Michael Howard and injuring another individual in December of last year. Howard’s body was discovered on the side of Interstate 65, with some toes and other body parts removed, and symbols carved into his skin. The second victim survived the attack.
Investigators revealed that Hristov had a history of torturing animals and idolizing serial killers. He reportedly expressed a desire to “hunt homeless people.” A Reddit post, believed to be made by Hristov himself, hinted at a possible serial killer in Louisville, which helped police connect him to the crimes.
Police Standoff and Shooting
Police surveillance on Hristov’s home had been ongoing for weeks. When officers attempted to serve an arrest warrant, Hristov fired at a police drone and made a 911 call stating, “I am not here to shoot at SWAT officers, I am here to be shot by them.” He informed the operator that he had one gun and 150 rounds of ammunition.
Deputy Chief Emily McKinley emphasized the importance of community vigilance, noting that Hristov’s actions were a stark reminder of the dangers lurking within the community. Authorities are urging anyone with information about unreported crimes against homeless individuals to come forward.
While the investigation continues, police believe they may have prevented further attacks on the homeless population by resolving this case.
