Missouri State University Receives Custom Steinway Piano for New Alumni Center

Missouri State University (MSU) in Springfield is set to enhance its new alumni center with a custom Steinway Spirio piano, a generous gift from alumni Gordon and Laura Kinne. This state-of-the-art player piano, adorned with the university’s bear head logo, will be a centerpiece in the Garnett Family Bears Den, a comfortable gathering space within the Clifton M. Smart III University Advancement Center.

Technological Marvel

The Steinway Spirio piano is not only a traditional instrument but also a technological marvel. According to Stephanie Smith, executive director of university advancement relations, the piano can be played remotely, allowing it to connect to concerts worldwide, including those at the Lincoln Center. This feature will enable the piano to play concerts live on a screen, bringing a unique musical experience to the center.

Generous Contributions

This piano is among several gifts announced by the Missouri State University Foundation, pushing the total funds raised for the $26 million center to over $10 million. Private donations and the sale of the Meyer Alumni Center have contributed approximately $20 million to the project. Other notable gifts include the Bart Bailey and Amelia Bailey Counts Executive Breakout Room and two BearMobiles, donated by Mary Asher Tearney and Stan and Ethel Curbow, to transport people across campus.

Construction Progress

Construction of the 28,000-square-foot advancement center is on track for completion in time for the fall 2026 semester. Mark Wheeler, MSU’s chief architect and director of construction, confirmed that the building process has been smooth, with no unexpected delays. The center will house the university’s foundation, alumni relations, and advancement departments, currently located in the Kenneth E. Meyer Alumni Center.

The new facility will feature an event ballroom, office suites, conference rooms, and an outdoor lawn for events. It will also include unique design elements reflecting the university’s mascot, such as logo medallions and a light display in the shape of the constellation Ursa Major.
