Turkey hopes to achieve a result on lifting US sanctions soon, according to Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan. Fidan stated that there is political will from both Ankara and Washington on removing the sanctions, and that the relevant ministers are working to resolve the issue.
Background
In 2020, Washington imposed sanctions on Turkey under the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) over its acquisition of Russian S-400 defense missile systems. The US also removed Ankara from the F-35 stealth fighter jet programme.
Fidan mentioned that there are two matters to be resolved in Turkey-US relations that are subject to US legislation: CAATSA and the issue of the F-35 jets. He expressed optimism that a conclusion would be reached soon.
