Trump tours White House construction, unveils new granite driveway and helipad slab

President Donald Trump invited members of the press to join an impromptu walk on the White House South Lawn on Wednesday, turning the tour into a showcase of recent construction work at the nation’s most recognizable residence.

Granite driveway replacement

Trump began by pointing to the freshly laid surface where reporters were standing. He described the previous asphalt as “basic” and said the new pavement uses a California‑mined white granite he called a “very special stone.” The president highlighted details such as the placement of stanchions and the radial cut of the granite, noting that the work eliminates potholes and improves the overall appearance of the historic entrance.

Helipad adjustments

After the driveway, Trump led the group toward the White House helipad. He explained that construction on the landing zone began shortly after his June UFC‑style event, but the stone surface was later dismantled because he felt the slope was too steep for rain runoff. “It was too much slope,” he said, adding that the helipad is now “dead flat.” The president signed a large slab of granite that he said would be flipped and installed as part of the final helipad surface, which now bears the presidential seal.

While standing near the helipad, Trump paused to point out fresh topsoil and newly planted grass, remarking, “If you’re grass, you’re very happy,” before moving on to other areas of the grounds.

Facade and ballroom updates

The tour also included a brief look at the White House façade, where paint has been stripped and reapplied. Trump expressed pride in the stone work, saying, “Look how perfect the stone is. I’m very proud to do it.” He then referenced the ongoing construction of a 90,000‑square‑foot ballroom beneath the residence. The administration has taken the project to the Supreme Court, arguing that the structure and its underground bunker constitute a matter of national security, a claim the president referred to as a “military complex.” Court filings indicate the ballroom is about 65 percent complete, with a 250‑person crew working long hours.

Presidential legacy and future use

Trump framed the construction efforts as a lasting part of his presidential legacy. “One thing I know how to do is build. I love construction, I love seeing things properly taken care of,” he said, adding that the projects will remain long after his administration ends. He also described how the new driveway and helipad would improve the experience for visiting dignitaries, envisioning a scenario where guests exit their vehicles, walk the new path, enjoy a cocktail on the helipad and then proceed to the ballroom for official functions.

A recent PolitiFact review found that, in 2026, Trump has spoken about these construction projects more often than any other topic, second only to his ongoing conflict with Iran.

Public reaction

Reporters noted the president’s detailed focus on construction specifics, from granite cuts to slope angles, as an unusual level of involvement for a commander‑in‑chief. Critics have questioned the cost and necessity of the projects, while supporters argue that a well‑maintained White House reflects national pride and security.

The White House has not provided an official budget breakdown for the driveway, helipad or ballroom work, and it declined to comment on the reasons for recent changes to the helipad surface.
