Springfield Public Schools held its annual Staff Kickoff on August 19 at Great Southern Bank Arena, bringing together roughly 3,500 district employees for a single day of encouragement and community spirit.
Temporary classrooms spark team morale
Because Bissett Elementary’s permanent campus at 3014 W. Calhoun St. is under construction, teachers and students are currently occupying the former Sherwood Elementary building at Sunshine Street and Scenic Avenue. Principal Jennifer Allie said the temporary setting has fostered a “level playing field” as staff adapt to new spaces while looking forward to the 2027‑28 renovation and expansion.
Leaders address funding realities
Superintendent Grenita Lathan explained that the district could not provide a cost‑of‑living salary increase this year due to flat state funding. Missouri’s General Assembly and Governor Mike Kehoe approved a budget that fell short of the Foundation Formula, delivering $6,830 per student instead of the projected $7,145. Lathan noted a one‑time $500 bonus slated for December and emphasized the need for community members to hold lawmakers accountable for underfunding.
Community voices and traditions
Mayor Jeff Schrag, Board President Judy Brunner, and MSU Athletic Director Patrick Ransdell offered remarks praising educators as “the face of Springfield Public Schools.” Teachers participated in costume traditions, with Delaware teachers dressing as baristas to match a “brewing successful students” theme. The event also featured light‑hearted skits and a video of Lathan on a Silver Dollar City roller coaster.
Looking ahead
Despite budget constraints, Lathan highlighted recent district victories and projected an improved Annual Progress Report later this year. She urged staff to maintain optimism, remember their influence in the community, and continue supporting students as the district navigates demographic shifts and upcoming facility upgrades.
