President Donald Trump has suggested that the UFC lighting grid, known as ‘The Claw,’ might remain on the White House South Lawn beyond its scheduled use for a UFC fight on June 14. In a TikTok video, Trump likened the structure to the Eiffel Tower, which was initially meant to be temporary but became a permanent fixture in Paris.
‘Many don’t know that in Paris, France, the Eiffel Tower — 1889 it was built. It was supposed to be taken down immediately after the World’s Fair, and then they said, “You know, we sorta like it, let’s leave it up a little bit longer.” Well, they never took it down,’ Trump stated. He continued, ‘And, you know, we’re building something in front of the White House that’s quite attractive to a lot of people. It’s going to have the big UFC fight on June 14, and I’m looking at it — and maybe we’ll never, ever take it down.’
Logistical Challenges
The potential permanence of ‘The Claw’ poses logistical challenges, as it occupies the area where Marine One typically lands, necessitating alternative arrangements for presidential travel. Currently, President Trump has been using motorcades to travel to Joint Base Andrews for Air Force One departures. The South Lawn is also a venue for large events, adding to the complexity of maintaining the structure.
UFC CEO Dana White, who was seen entering the West Wing recently, has confirmed that UFC is covering the costs associated with the event, including an estimated $60 million for construction. White mentioned that $700,000 will be spent on re-sodding the South Lawn after the event, acknowledging the impact on the grounds.
White House Modifications
This is not the first time President Trump has made significant changes to the White House and its surroundings. Previous modifications include demolishing the East Wing, paving the Rose Garden, and creating ‘The Presidential Walk of Fame.’ Additionally, Trump has initiated changes in Washington, D.C., for the America 250 celebration, such as painting the Reflecting Pool and restoring city fountains.
The UFC event, scheduled on Flag Day and Trump’s 80th birthday, is being heavily promoted by the White House, with imagery such as a muscular Uncle Sam being shared on social media.
