A-State’s Veterinary College Launches Farm Service in Jonesboro

Arkansas State University in Jonesboro is taking a significant step in community engagement with the launch of its College of Veterinary Medicine’s Large Animal Ambulatory Service (LAAS). This initiative aims to deliver veterinary care directly to local farms, addressing the needs of animal owners in the area.

Community-Centric Veterinary Care

Dr. Trey Neyland, a teaching assistant professor of livestock practice, emphasized the importance of this service in connecting the college with the community. “A-State’s CVM is centered around serving the community, and the ambulatory service is an important way for us to provide veterinary care directly to animal owners where they are,” he stated.

The LAAS involves a team from the CVM traveling to farms, homes, or facilities to provide veterinary care for large animal species. Dr. Neyland, along with Dr. Scott Reiners, a teaching associate professor of equine practice, offers a range of services including wellness and sick-patient examinations, routine herd health care, breeding soundness exams, pregnancy examinations, on-farm consultations, lameness evaluations, and certificates of veterinary inspection.

Educational Benefits for Students

As the college prepares to welcome its first students this fall, the LAAS is set to play a crucial role in their education. Dr. Neyland highlighted that the service provides students with hands-on, real-life experience in rural veterinary medicine, which is essential for their development. During their fourth-year clinical rotations, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine students will have the opportunity to further hone their clinical skills while contributing to the community’s veterinary needs.

Currently, the service primarily attends to horses, cattle, and goats, operating from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. This initiative not only supports local farmers but also reinforces the college’s commitment to community-based veterinary care.
