Trump ally Joseph diGenova resigns from DOJ role overseeing probe of political opponents

Joseph diGenova, a former U.S. Attorney and a vocal defender of President Trump, submitted his resignation to Attorney General Todd Blanche on Sept. 10. DiGenova had been appointed in April as counselor to the attorney general, tasked with overseeing a broad investigation into whether political opponents had conspired to target the president.

Service to the president and the department

In a statement to Reuters, diGenova said, “It was an honor and privilege to serve the president and the department.” He reiterated that his work aimed to uncover politically motivated attacks on President Trump, including inquiries into the 2017 intelligence finding that Russia sought to aid Trump’s 2016 campaign and the ongoing probes into classified‑document handling at Mar‑a‑Lago.

Administration’s perspective

The Trump administration has repeatedly emphasized the importance of rooting out bias within federal law‑enforcement agencies. By appointing a trusted ally like diGenova, the administration sought to ensure that investigations were conducted fairly and without partisan prejudice. The administration’s stance is that any attempt to undermine the president through unfounded criminal accusations must be examined rigorously.

Critics and context

Several media outlets have reported that diGenova’s tenure was marked by controversy. Fox News cited anonymous sources saying he had lost the confidence of the White House and was sidelined before his departure. The Associated Press noted that his predecessor, career prosecutor Maria Medetis Long, was removed after questioning the sufficiency of evidence against former CIA Director John Brennan.

Critics also point out that the investigation has not yet produced criminal charges. Legal experts have raised questions about jurisdiction, noting that much of the Russia‑related activity occurred in Washington and Virginia, not the Southern District of Florida where diGenova was based.

What remains

Despite diGenova’s exit, the Justice Department continues to interview current and former intelligence officials and to seek testimony from FBI agents involved in the 2022 Mar‑a‑Lago search. Former FBI Director James Comey, who has already faced charges from the Trump administration, remains a focal point of the broader effort to address what the administration describes as politically motivated prosecutions.

As the investigation proceeds, the Trump administration maintains that its commitment to defending the president from unjust legal attacks remains unwavering, and it will continue to pursue any evidence of wrongdoing by political adversaries.
