TikTok ‘question‑swap’ prank videos spark debate over media literacy

A new TikTok and Instagram trend, dubbed “question‑swap,” has users filming friends, family or coworkers answering innocent prompts, then replacing the original question with a shocking one. The edited clips often feature absurd scenarios such as attacking a starving orphan or having sex with dozens of firefighters.

How the prank works

Creators first record a genuine interview, then splice in a new, provocative question. The resulting video shows the subject reacting with surprise or embarrassment. The edits are deliberately obvious, emphasizing the joke rather than attempting deception.

Local examples

In Chicago, 22‑year‑old Tessani Foster filmed her 78‑year‑old grandmother, Kathi Julison, answering a question about eating four ice‑cream cones. The clip was later altered to suggest Julison was asked how she would feed a hungry orphan, amassing more than six million views.

In Knoxville, Tennessee, restaurant owners Jesse and Corey Vose of Fiori were filmed answering a question about confronting an armed intruder. The footage was later swapped with a query about a starving orphan, generating over 18 million views and even bringing new customers to the eatery.

Expert perspective

Brooke Duffy, a communications professor at Cornell University, says younger generations are keenly aware of media manipulation and use these tools for “deception‑based entertainment.” Digital anthropologist Crystal Abidin notes the amateur editing style signals that the videos are meant as jokes, not malicious misinformation.

Steffi Cao, a 27‑year‑old freelance reporter, observes that the trend highlights a generational divide: those “in on the humor” find it funny, while older viewers may feel alienated.

Community reaction

Participants report mixed feelings. Julison said she found the prank funny, while the Voses noted the viral exposure brought unexpected business. Some viewers, however, criticize the videos for making light of serious topics such as hunger and violence.

Commenters often extend the joke, pretending to take the altered statements seriously and calling for the subjects to be “canceled.” The phenomenon illustrates how social media blurs the line between personal amusement and public perception.

What it means for media literacy

Experts warn that the ease of creating such edits may desensitize younger users to more sophisticated disinformation. The trend serves as a reminder that critical thinking and awareness of context remain essential when consuming online content.
