Thousands Gather for La Tomatina Festival in Buñol, Spain

Buñol, Spain – On Wednesday, the streets of Buñol were transformed into a sea of red as over 20,000 revelers took part in the annual La Tomatina festival. The hour‑long food fight, which uses up to 165 tons of overripe tomatoes, draws participants from across Spain and abroad, turning the modest town into a bustling hub of celebration.

Organizers cover the town’s buildings with tarps before the event begins, protecting property while allowing participants to hurl tomatoes freely. The tradition dates back to a spontaneous food fight in 1945 and became an annual event before being banned by General Francisco Franco in the 1950s. Television coverage in the 1980s revived the festival, and it has since grown into an international attraction.

Tourist Surge and Cultural Impact

Spanish news agency EFE reports that roughly 40 % of participants over the past three years have been tourists from outside Spain. Notably, visitors from India have increased sharply after the 2011 Bollywood film “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara,” which featured a scene recreating La Tomatina. The movie inspired Romail Khokhar, a 27‑year‑old entrepreneur from Mumbai, to attend his third festival this year. “I feel really great, actually. It’s the best festival that I ever had, and I enjoy a lot here,” Khokhar said.

Non‑local attendees pay a ticket price of 15 euros (about $17.50). The sole rule of the event is to squash tomatoes before throwing them, a safety measure intended to reduce injuries. Many participants wear swimming goggles and earplugs for additional protection.

Global Replications

La Tomatina’s fame has inspired similar tomato‑flinging events worldwide, including gatherings in Florida, London, Amsterdam, the Colombian town of Sutamarchán, and Hyderabad, India. These spin‑offs reflect the festival’s growing influence as a symbol of joyous, communal celebration.

When the hour ends, a cannon blast signals the conclusion, and participants wash off in communal showers set up nearby. Streets are later hosed down, and despite the mess, the citric acid in the tomatoes often leaves Buñol’s streets cleaner than before. While tomato stains can permanently mark clothing, many visitors consider the experience a once‑in‑a‑lifetime memory worth the souvenir splatter.
