Thomson Reuters, a Canadian content and technology company, announced it is cutting a small number of roles in engineering. The layoffs, which affect the global staff, were announced during a technology staff meeting. The company plans to eliminate up to 500 jobs, accounting for about 1.8% of its overall workforce of about 27,100.
Job Reductions in the Tech Sector
The layoffs are part of a wave of job reductions across the technology sector, which has been impacted by artificial intelligence tools that have made writing computer code more efficient. About 120,000 tech workers have lost their jobs across 228 companies, including tech giants Meta and Amazon, in 2026.
A Thomson Reuters spokesperson stated that the company is focusing its capacity where it matters most to customers and is supporting affected colleagues through the transition. The company also expects to hire more than 250 net-new engineering roles globally over the next two years, with a large majority being senior and AI-native positions.
