Texas State Parks are marking the nation’s 250th birthday with dozens of special Independence Day events across the state, offering visitors everything from historical demonstrations and Dutch oven cooking to night hikes, stargazing, and wildlife programs.

History enthusiasts can explore the stories behind several state parks through guided hikes at Lake Corpus Christi State Park, Goose Island State Park, and the Johnson Branch Unit of Ray Roberts Lake State Park.
At Fort Richardson State Park, visitors can watch artillery demonstrations and military drills highlighting Texas’ frontier history. Dinosaur Valley State Park will offer programs about its world-famous dinosaur tracks, while Goliad State Park and Historic Site will explore the role of Texas cattle drives and ranching in the American Revolution era.
Many parks will give visitors an opportunity to experience traditional American skills and crafts. Dutch oven cooking demonstrations are planned at Cooper, Mustang Island, Ray Roberts Lake, and Purtis Creek state parks.
Visitors can also learn how ink similar to that used to sign America’s founding documents was made and even create their own at several parks, including Bastrop, Cooper, Dinosaur Valley, Goose Island, Lake Corpus Christi, Mission Tejas, Lockhart, Palo Pinto Mountains, Purtis Creek, Government Canyon State Natural Area, and Hill Country State Natural Area.

Several events highlight Texas’ natural beauty alongside the patriotic festivities. Caprock Canyons State Park will feature programs about the Texas State Bison Herd, while Palo Pinto Mountains, Mother Neff, Pedernales Falls, and Purtis Creek state parks will host nighttime stargazing events.
Families looking for holiday-themed activities will find plenty of options. Lockhart State Park will host a red, white, and blue scavenger hunt, while Galveston Island State Park is inviting visitors to participate in its Ultimate Picnic Photo Challenge and sunset watercolor painting sessions.
