Texas ranks near the bottom in auto repair shop density, highlighting market opportunities

Texas may not lead the nation in the number of auto repair shops per capita, but the state’s sheer volume of establishments—14,614 as of the fourth quarter of 2025—still offers a robust market for mechanics and entrepreneurs alike. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 176,403 automotive repair and maintenance establishments across the United States at that time, placing Texas’s share at roughly 8.3 percent of the total.

Why shop density matters

Shop density, measured as the number of shops per 100,000 residents, provides insight into both consumer demand and competitive pressure. Texas’s 46.1 shops per 100,000 people ranks it ninth‑lowest among the 50 states. In contrast, sparsely populated states such as Wyoming, South Dakota and Montana top the list, reflecting the need for widespread service points in large, rural areas.

Changing vehicle landscape fuels demand

The Federal Highway Administration reported 297,525,836 registered motor vehicles in the United States in 2024, with the average vehicle age now at 12.8 years. As cars age, owners are less likely to replace them outright. Kelley Blue Book noted that the average price paid for a new vehicle in November 2025 was $49,814, a 1.3 % increase over the previous year, making new‑car purchases less attractive for many families.

At the same time, repair costs are climbing. The Bureau of Transportation Statistics’ consumer price index shows vehicle maintenance and repair prices were up 5.4 % year‑over‑year as of December 2025—about 51 % higher than they were in January 2019. These trends suggest that Texans are holding onto their cars longer and turning to professional mechanics for upkeep.

Labor outlook for the industry

Hiring remains a significant challenge. Industry forecasts anticipate roughly 70,000 technician and mechanic openings each year nationwide through 2034. For Texas entrepreneurs, this means a steady pipeline of talent, but also heightened competition for skilled workers.

What the numbers mean for Texans

Consumers in low‑density states like Texas may experience longer wait times and fewer price‑shopping options, especially during peak seasons. Conversely, higher‑density markets typically enjoy more competition, which can drive down prices and improve service quality. Prospective shop owners should weigh these factors alongside local labor rates and real‑estate costs when evaluating a new location.

Local perspective

For Texas drivers, the data underscores the importance of researching repair shops, checking reviews, and considering proximity when scheduling service. For business owners, the relatively low shop density points to untapped opportunities, particularly in growing metropolitan areas where vehicle miles traveled continue to rise.

Overall, while Texas does not rank among the states with the most auto repair shops per capita, the combination of an aging vehicle fleet, rising repair costs, and a sizable labor pipeline creates a fertile environment for both consumers and entrepreneurs seeking to meet the state’s automotive service needs.
