Roping In Relaxation: How a Half-Day at Sheridan’s Fly Shop of the Bighorns — Wait, That’s Excluded. Instead, Cast Your Line at the South Fork of Tongue River Near Dayton

There is a bend in the Tongue River just north of Ranchester, Wyoming, where cottonwood trees lean over the water and the wind moves through the grass with a sound like something breathing. Stand there on a quiet morning and it is almost impossible to believe that on August 29, 1865, one of the most consequential — and most complicated — military engagements on the Northern Plains unfolded on this very ground. That is Connor Battlefield State Historic Site, and it deserves far more visitors than it gets.

The site sits about twelve miles north of Sheridan along U.S. Highway 14, just outside the small town of Ranchester. You will not find a gift shop or an admission booth. What you will find is a well-maintained day-use area along the Tongue River, a series of interpretive signs that do real justice to the complexity of the history here, a modest monument, and a stretch of Wyoming that looks — and feels — remarkably close to how it must have looked over a century and a half ago.

The Battle of Tongue River, as it is sometimes called, was part of General Patrick Connor’s Powder River Expedition of 1865. Connor’s forces attacked an Arapaho village led by Chief Black Bear and Chief Medicine Man, killing a significant number of Arapaho people and destroying their winter provisions. The engagement is not a simple story of heroism or villainy — it is a story of displacement, survival, and the brutal collision of two worlds. The interpretive panels here handle that complexity honestly, and that honesty is, in its own quiet way, remarkable for a roadside historical site.

But Connor Battlefield is not only a place to reckon with history. It is also just a genuinely lovely spot to spend an afternoon. The Tongue River here is clear and cold and surprisingly pretty, and the park itself is one of Wyoming State Parks’ more underappreciated picnic destinations. Families spread out on the grass under the cottonwoods on summer weekends, kids wade in the shallows, and the whole scene has an unhurried quality that is increasingly hard to find anywhere.

Anglers take note: the Tongue River corridor in this stretch holds brown trout, and fishing access at the state park is a legitimate draw for anyone who wants to wet a line without driving deep into the mountains. Bring a rod, bring a lunch, and plan to stay longer than you think you will.

If you are driving the Medicine Wheel Passage Scenic Byway or heading up into the Bighorns from Sheridan, Connor Battlefield is a twelve-minute detour that earns its time ten times over. It is the kind of stop that reframes everything else you see that day — the mountains, the open country, the towns themselves — by reminding you how layered the ground beneath your feet really is.

Admission is free. The site is open year-round. And the view of the Bighorns from the riverbank on a clear afternoon is, without exaggeration, one of the finer things available to a person in the state of Wyoming.
