Texas Public Radio and San Antonio Report to Merge Operations

In a significant development for local journalism, Texas Public Radio (TPR) and the San Antonio Report are set to merge their operations starting July 1. This merger will create the largest nonprofit newsroom in San Antonio’s history, a move that leaders from both organizations hope will bolster local news coverage amid financial pressures facing the industry.

The decision to combine operations comes as local journalism grapples with shrinking newsroom staffs and evolving audience habits. The merger is framed as a proactive growth strategy rather than merely a response to financial challenges. By pooling resources, TPR and the San Antonio Report aim to enhance their reporting capabilities and reach a broader audience across the San Antonio region.

Under the merger plan, the San Antonio Report’s assets will be donated to Texas Public Radio. Despite the merger, both entities will continue to publish content on their respective websites and platforms for the time being. The combined newsroom is expected to comprise approximately 31 journalists, the largest number either organization has ever employed.

Leadership and Future Plans

In terms of leadership changes, San Antonio Report’s publisher and CEO, Angie Mock, will transition into a role focused on transformational gifts for one year. Meanwhile, Leigh Munsil, the current Editor-in-Chief of the San Antonio Report, will take on the role of Senior Vice President of News and Editor-in-Chief across both news teams.

TPR President and CEO Ashley Alvarado has stated that there are no immediate plans to consolidate roles, although the organization will assess how positions align within the merged entity over time. To support the expanded digital operations and reporting capacity, the organizations have successfully raised $1.4 million from local donors and philanthropic groups.

This merger reflects a broader trend among public media and nonprofit news organizations nationwide, as they explore sustainable business models to ensure the longevity and vitality of local journalism. By joining forces, TPR and the San Antonio Report aim to strengthen their ability to provide comprehensive and reliable news coverage to the San Antonio community.
