San Antonio has experienced a slight reprieve from its historic drought conditions thanks to recent rainfall. The city has received 12.85 inches of rain this year, surpassing the average by 1.59 inches. This has brought some relief to the region, but experts caution that much more rain is needed to fully alleviate the drought.

Impact on Local Water Resources

According to Steven Siebert, manager of water resources at the San Antonio Water System (SAWS), the additional rainfall has improved local hydrologic conditions, easing long-term drought impacts. However, key water indicators remain low. The Edwards Aquifer is still 27 feet below average, Comal Spring flows are at half their normal levels, and Canyon Lake is only 58.7% full.

F. Paul Bertetti, senior director of aquifer science at the Edwards Aquifer Authority, noted that while recent rains are beneficial, they are not sufficient to end the drought. Over the past six years, the area has experienced a rainfall deficit of more than 70 inches. To restore water levels, the region would need a year with 11 to 14 inches of excess rain.

El Niño’s Potential Influence

Looking ahead, meteorologist Monte Oaks from the National Weather Service suggests that 2026’s El Niño conditions could bring more rain to the region. El Niño typically results in increased rainfall as warm Pacific Ocean waters push moisture into Texas. While a similar event in 2023 did not end the drought, it raises hopes for more rain and cooler temperatures later this year.

In the meantime, San Antonio residents continue to face water restrictions, with a 35% reduction in pumping from the Edwards Aquifer to maintain spring flows and aquifer health. The recent rainfall has provided temporary relief, but the community remains vigilant as it navigates ongoing drought challenges.
