Texas GOP Unites Ahead of Midterms

The Texas Republican Party is gathering in Houston for its state convention, marking a significant shift from the infighting that characterized the party in recent years. Governor Greg Abbott and House Speaker Dustin Burrows are leading the charge, with Abbott emerging as a key sponsor of the event and Burrows set to address the convention as the first sitting speaker to do so.

A New Era of Unity

The party’s newfound unity is a stark change from the Texas GOP of years past, which was marked by a strained relationship between Abbott and the party, as well as a contentious primary fight aimed at ousting moderate lawmakers. However, with Attorney General Ken Paxton’s recent primary runoff victory, party leaders are hopeful that they can pass a new batch of conservative priorities approved by convention delegates.

Abbott’s redemption arc has been notable, as he has become a leading voice on issues such as immigration and private school vouchers. The governor’s efforts to oust House Republicans who thwarted his voucher bill in 2023 ultimately paid off, as he helped flip enough seats to secure the bill’s passage. Burrows, meanwhile, has worked to repair his relationship with the state party, which had been strained due to his initial election as speaker with the help of Democrats.

A United Front

Party leaders are emphasizing the need for unity ahead of the midterms, with Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick and others warning that Republicans need to put aside their differences and support the entire ticket. The convention will feature a number of high-profile speakers, including Paxton, Abbott, Burrows, and Patrick, and will set the tone for next year’s legislative session.

While some grassroots activists maintain that the party’s threats to ban House Republicans from the primary ballot helped to pressure Burrows and the chamber into action, others see the party’s newfound unity as a positive development. Former Texas GOP Chair Matt Rinaldi noted that the party’s structure, which allows the grassroots to set legislative priorities, has helped to move the needle on key issues.
