In a bid to explore the most efficient way to reach Red Rocks Amphitheater, Denverite staff members embarked on a race using different modes of transportation. The event coincided with the debut of the Westracks shuttle, the first public transit option to the iconic venue, albeit with limited hours.
The Race Begins
Participants gathered at Union Station on a busy Saturday morning. Kiara DeMare opted for a car, Kyle Harris chose a rentable e-bike from Veo, and Paolo Zialcita took on the challenge of public transit, utilizing the W Line and the new shuttle service.
Kiara’s car journey was straightforward, taking her just 27 minutes, despite a minor detour. Meanwhile, Kyle’s e-bike adventure was cut short due to a no-ride zone, demonstrating the limitations of micromobility options in the area.
Public Transit Challenges
Paolo’s journey highlighted the current limitations of Denver’s public transit system. With a 30-minute wait for the train and a lengthy shuttle ride, the trip took significantly longer than by car. However, the experience was pleasant and offered a chance to enjoy a book during the ride.
The Westracks shuttle, part of a two-year pilot program, currently operates only on weekends and holidays. Passengers have expressed interest in expanded service hours, especially for concert-goers.
Community Insights
During the journey, Paolo met Taeyoun Kwon, a visitor from Seoul, who noted the differences between Denver’s and Seoul’s transit systems. The experience underscored the need for improvements to make public transit a viable option for more residents and visitors.
As the race concluded, the team regrouped in Morrison, reflecting on the diverse transportation experiences and the potential for future transit developments in Denver.
