Spain’s World Cup Team Finds Training Base in Chattanooga

Chattanooga, Tennessee, is buzzing with excitement as the city welcomes Spain’s national soccer team, La Roja, for their 2026 World Cup training. The team has chosen the private Baylor School as their base camp, bringing global attention to this scenic city nestled along the Tennessee River.

Why Chattanooga?

Spain’s decision to train in Chattanooga, despite their matches being held in Atlanta, highlights the city’s appeal for privacy and security. Aitor Karanka, the Royal Spanish Football Federation’s technical director, praised the facilities and the seclusion offered by Baylor School. “In Chattanooga, we find the privacy in the training ground,” Karanka noted, emphasizing the importance of a focused environment for the reigning European champions.

The choice of Chattanooga is not only strategic for the team but also a boon for the local community. The presence of soccer stars like Lamine Yamal, recovering from a hamstring injury, has inspired students at Baylor School. “It’s humbling knowing we’re playing for a state championship and Lamine’s playing for a World Cup,” remarked Thomas Vance, a student athlete.

Community Impact

The arrival of Spain’s team has sparked enthusiasm beyond the school grounds. Local businesses, such as Amada Tapas and Wine, are preparing to offer authentic Spanish cuisine, hoping to provide a taste of home to the visiting team. “We plan to offer traditional paellas throughout June and July,” said co-owner Amanda Trotter.

The city is also coordinating with various levels of government to ensure a seamless experience for the team. Tim Morgan, president of the Sports and Events Corporation, highlighted the collaborative efforts to align security and logistics for this major international event.

As Spain prepares for their group stage matches, the time spent in Chattanooga is expected to contribute to their World Cup journey. The legacy of their visit will likely inspire young athletes and leave a lasting impact on the community.
