U.S. Job Market Surges Despite Economic Pressures from Iran Conflict

The U.S. economy demonstrated resilience in May by adding 172,000 jobs, significantly surpassing Wall Street’s forecast of 80,000. This robust job growth comes amid ongoing economic pressures from the conflict in Iran, which has led to a severe energy and inflation crisis.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the national unemployment rate remained steady at 4.3%. The job gains were broad-based, with the leisure and hospitality sector leading the way by adding 70,000 positions. Local government employment increased by 55,000, and the health care sector saw 35,000 new hires.

Despite the positive job numbers, American workers continue to face financial strains. Average hourly earnings rose by 0.3% in May and 3.4% over the past year, aligning with Wall Street expectations. However, wage growth is still lagging behind inflation, which reached 3.8% in April, the highest in three years, driven by surging fuel prices linked to the conflict abroad.

Since the onset of the war with Iran on February 28, retail gasoline prices have increased by more than 40%, with U.S. crude oil prices spiking by 35%. Diesel fuel prices have surged by 55%, impacting shipping, farming, and transportation costs, and contributing to a rise in wholesale inflation to 6% in April, up from 4.3% in March.

Federal Reserve’s Delicate Balancing Act

The Federal Reserve faces a challenging task as it navigates these conflicting economic indicators. While the first-quarter gross domestic product grew at a 1.6% annualized rate, and the Atlanta Fed projects second-quarter gains at 3%, central bankers remain cautious. The labor market had previously contracted in late 2025 and experienced setbacks in February. As a result, the Fed is maintaining a policy holding pattern, focusing on the persistent inflation issue and ruling out additional interest rate cuts in the near future.
