Tesla to showcase Cybercab robotaxi at exclusive Austin event

On Thursday, Tesla plans to hold an exclusive “Cybercab Launch Event” in Austin, Texas, offering select guests a preview of its purpose‑built robotaxi. The gathering, promoted on X as “Exclusive Access: Cybercab,” comes as the company ramps up production of the two‑seat vehicle that operates without a steering wheel or pedals.

What the Cybercab is

The Cybercab features butterfly doors and a sleek interior designed for full autonomy. While early test units spotted on U.S. streets have retained a steering wheel for safety, the production model is intended to run without any driver input. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said the vehicle will eventually be priced around $30,000, positioning it as an affordable option for the company’s expanding robotaxi network.

Production and testing progress

Tesla began limited production of Cybercabs in April and has been conducting public‑road tests. According to a report from The Information, the company plans to let employees ride the vehicles on public streets before rolling them out to the broader robotaxi service in Austin within days.

Regulatory and safety considerations

Tesla has not yet confirmed whether it has secured all required regulatory approvals or demonstrated compliance with federal safety standards for commercial operation. The company’s Full Self‑Driving (FSD) system, which still requires constant human supervision, has faced multiple federal investigations and lawsuits after collisions and traffic violations. However, the version of FSD that powers the Cybercab is marketed as a fully autonomous system that does not need a driver behind the wheel. Tesla claims this technology is already ten times safer than human drivers.

Event details and public access

The exact time of the Austin event has not been announced, and Tesla has not indicated whether it will livestream the proceedings. Invitations have been sent to a limited group of guests, and the company has encouraged attendees to share their experiences on social media.

Implications for Austin

If the Cybercab proves successful, Austin could become one of the first U.S. cities to host a large‑scale autonomous robotaxi fleet, potentially easing traffic congestion and providing a new transportation option for residents. Local officials have not yet commented on the upcoming launch, but the city’s tech‑friendly reputation makes it a logical testing ground for innovative mobility solutions.

As Tesla continues to expand its autonomous vehicle portfolio, the Austin event marks a significant milestone in the company’s push to commercialize robotaxi services nationwide.
