Idaho DMV Brings Self‑Service Registration Kiosks to Boise and Meridian Grocery Stores

Idaho families in the Treasure Valley will soon be able to handle a routine DMV task without leaving the grocery aisle. The Idaho Department of Motor Vehicles (ITD) announced that five self‑service kiosks will be installed in local Fred Meyer stores in Boise and Meridian over the next several weeks.

Convenient registration renewal at the checkout line

Each kiosk will initially allow drivers to renew a standard vehicle registration. The service does not yet support changes to personal or vehicle information, but ITD says additional features will be added as the program expands.

Customers will pay the usual credit‑card processing fee plus a vendor service charge – the exact amount has not yet been disclosed. Even with the extra fee, many residents will appreciate the time saved by avoiding a separate trip to a DMV office.

“Skip the Trip” effort expands

The kiosks are part of ITD’s broader “Skip the Trip” effort, which aims to reduce unnecessary travel to state offices. Idaho already offers online registration renewal, but the kiosks provide a helpful alternative for those who prefer in‑person service or lack reliable internet access.

After the first five locations go live, a sixth kiosk is slated for the Albertsons at 2400 12th Avenue Road in Nampa. Further machines are planned for Idaho Falls, Pocatello, Twin Falls and the Coeur d’Alene area.

What about the discontinued registration stickers?

Effective July 1, 2026, Idaho stopped issuing the small annual registration stickers that once adorned license plates. The change does not eliminate the registration requirement; drivers must still keep their registration current and be prepared to show documentation if asked by law enforcement. Electronic verification now replaces the physical sticker.

By allowing registration renewal while shoppers pick up milk or bread, the new kiosks embody a practical, family‑friendly solution that respects busy schedules and supports the state’s commitment to efficient government services.

Looking ahead

ITD officials suggest the grocery‑store model could eventually expand to other services, such as driver’s license renewals or even basic postal functions. While those ideas remain speculative, the current rollout demonstrates a clear focus on making government more accessible to Idaho’s hardworking families.

For now, Boise and Meridian residents can look forward to a smoother, quicker way to keep their vehicles legally registered – all without adding another stop to their daily errands.
