Tensions Escalate at New Jersey ICE Facility Amid Protests

In Newark, New Jersey, tensions have risen outside the Delaney Hall ICE facility as supporters of ICE and protesters clashed over the weekend. The protests, which have been ongoing for several days, were sparked by allegations of inhumane conditions within the privately owned detention center.

Increased Security Measures

Law enforcement, including local police and New Jersey State Police, have been deployed to manage the situation. A SWAT team in riot gear was also present to maintain order. Overnight, the security perimeter around the facility was expanded, with cement barricades and new fencing installed to control access.

State police checkpoints were established, blocking vehicle access from a half-mile away. Organizers of the ‘Support ICE’ rally urged participants to remain peaceful and law-abiding.

Allegations and Responses

The protests intensified following reports of detainees going on a hunger strike over Memorial Day weekend, citing spoiled food and poor living conditions. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin criticized politicians for allegedly spreading false information about the facility’s conditions.

In response to these allegations, Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis stated that claims of inhumane conditions were false and that illegal immigrants at the facility receive adequate care, including meals and medical attention.

State Intervention

New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill announced that state police would take over public safety operations from ICE agents to de-escalate tensions. A designated protest zone was established to allow for peaceful demonstrations.

Governor Sherrill emphasized the importance of advocating for improved conditions for detainees and called for the closure of Delaney Hall. She also highlighted the need to protect public safety and prevent further escalation.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has considered reallocating Customs and Border Protection officers from Newark Airport to assist at the facility, which could impact air travel.

Arrests and Legal Actions

During the protests, clashes between protesters and law enforcement resulted in several arrests. Nine individuals were detained during similar protests earlier in the week. DHS has warned that anyone assaulting law enforcement will face prosecution.

As the situation develops, the focus remains on maintaining order and addressing the concerns raised by both sides of the protest.
