Coral Springs Man Convicted of Second-Degree Murder in Delray Beach Case

In a significant local case, Christopher Soto, a 25-year-old resident of Coral Springs, has been convicted of second-degree murder by a Palm Beach County jury. The conviction comes after the tragic discovery of a woman’s body in a canal west of Delray Beach in 2023.

Details of the Crime

The jury reached its verdict on May 21 after a five-day trial, finding Soto guilty of both second-degree murder and tampering with physical evidence. Originally charged with first-degree murder, Soto’s charges were adjusted, and a potential charge of providing false statements to law enforcement was not pursued by prosecutors.

Evidence presented during the trial revealed that on June 23, 2023, Soto fatally stabbed the woman and attempted to hide his crime by disposing of her body and other evidence. The woman’s body was found wrapped in a black floral-patterned blanket in a canal located in the 5500 block of West Atlantic Avenue, a short distance from the Kings Point community.

Investigation and Trial

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene shortly before 4:30 p.m. on June 25, 2023, after receiving a report of the body. The woman, described as white or Hispanic and aged between 25 and 40, was later identified, though her identity remains protected under Marsy’s Law.

Forensic evidence linked Soto to the crime, with significant findings at the residence he shared with his girlfriend, who was also the victim’s roommate. The victim, who had been homeless, was allowed to stay at the Kings Point residence where Soto also lived, despite his official address being in Coral Springs.

During the investigation, Soto made incriminating statements, including admitting to having had a relationship with the victim and suggesting his potential guilt when questioned by his girlfriend. Despite attempts to explain away the blood evidence found in the home, Soto’s explanations were deemed implausible.

Community Impact

The case has drawn attention to the community, highlighting issues of homelessness and the importance of thorough investigative work by local law enforcement. The Palm Beach County State Attorney’s Office has expressed gratitude to the detectives for their dedication and thorough investigation.

Sentencing for Christopher Soto is scheduled for June 18, where the community will await the final judgment in this tragic case.
