The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office released its investigation of the tragic drowning that claimed the lives of a student and his teacher during a school‑of‑the‑wild field trip from Borlaug Elementary in Coralville.
What happened
On September 22, around noon, a group of 14 fifth‑graders from Borlaug Elementary was on a woodland hike that ended at the shore of Lake Macbride State Park, adjacent to the Coralville Reservoir. While the class paused for lunch, 10‑year‑old Ahmed Osman of Iowa City stepped onto the spillway, slipped on the rocks and fell into the water.
Teacher Hannah Jorgensen, 24, of Tiffin, immediately jumped in to try to save the child. She left her phone on the shore and instructed the students to call 911. One student was able to place the emergency call, while the other children alerted a nearby bystander.
Rescue attempt and recovery
The bystander also leapt into the lake in an effort to assist the teacher and student, but was unable to pull them to safety. After the failed rescue, the bystander stayed on the scene with the remaining students and cooperated fully with investigators.
First‑responders arrived quickly, but despite their efforts they were only able to recover the bodies of Jorgensen and Osman from the water. The sheriff’s office later confirmed that both victims had died at the scene.
Investigation findings
The sheriff’s report notes that the spillway’s water flow created a hazardous condition that contributed to the accident. The investigation also highlighted the swift actions of both the teacher and the bystander, describing Jorgensen’s decision to enter the water as a self‑less attempt to protect a child.
All of the other students were interviewed as part of the investigation and have been offered counseling services by the school district.
Community response
Local officials, school administrators, and faith‑based groups have expressed deep sorrow and praised the bravery of both the teacher and the bystander. The Borlaug Elementary community is rallying to support the families of the victims, emphasizing the importance of parental involvement and safety education during school outings.
Mayor of Coralville, in a statement, called the incident “a heartbreaking reminder of the need for vigilant supervision and proper safety measures on all school field trips.” The school district has pledged to review its outdoor activity protocols to prevent future tragedies.
Looking ahead
While the loss of a young life and a dedicated educator is a profound tragedy for the Coralville area, the community’s response underscores the shared values of family, faith, and personal responsibility that define Eastern Iowa. Authorities continue to work with the school district to ensure that future excursions prioritize safety while preserving the educational benefits of outdoor learning.
